A Lincoln family is grieving the loss of their teenage son, and asking other parents to have an urgent conversation with their children about the dangers of open water.

Declan Sawyer, 15, died on Sunday after getting into difficulty while in the water at Swanholme Lakes in Lincoln.

Emergency services were called to the lakes at around 2.30pm. Lincolnshire Police launched a search operation, with their dive team working through the afternoon. By Sunday evening, a body had been found. With the family's agreement, police confirmed it was Declan.

His father Carl described him as "a funny and outgoing young man who loved his fishing and his football. He had a very cheeky smile and the personality to match." Carl said Declan was "very much loved by his friends and family, and will be missed dearly by many."

The family has asked other parents to speak to their children about the risks of swimming in lakes and rivers, particularly during hot weather. "With his tragic and unexpected passing, we would like to raise awareness about children playing near any rivers or lakes in the hot weather," Carl said. "Please can all parents, friends and family make their children aware of the dangers surrounding water."

Declan's school, Priory City of Lincoln Academy, said the loss has shaken the entire community. In a statement on Monday, the school said: "This loss is devastating and our entire Priory Lincoln learning community is grieving alongside Declan's family and friends. Declan was a valued member of our academy and a loyal friend to many students. His absence will be felt profoundly in the coming days, weeks and months ahead."

Lincolnshire Police said the incident would affect not only those who knew Declan personally but the wider community too. With half-term beginning this week, they urged anyone affected to reach out for support.
